Blooming Flowers by the Moonlight
There are flowers that do grow by the moon and darkness. These flowers certainly put on their best show after the sun has disappeared from the sky. These evening bloomers are usually tropical plants suited to warmer climates. However you have the choice of perennials or just plant them as tender tropical plants and treat them like summer annuals. You still have the bonus of bringing them indoors in the those winter climates.
I have a particular fondness for several nocturnal flowers. I enjoy moonflower or moonvine,evening primrose or night-blooming cereus to mention a few. The important thing about the night-blooming cereus is the actual flower has its primary residence in the southern Arizona desert,Texas and south to northern Mexico. These desert plants usually inhabit areas at elevations of 3000 to 5000 feet. If you can be in the desert on the right night of either the month of June or July you might catch a glimpse of the beautiful white petal in its four inch wide and nearly eight inch long format.
I have an easier solution to this problem you can purchase an Epiphyllum Oxpetallum which is not really a night blooming cereus but many times referred to using the terminology. It is epiphytic which in the eyes of a gardener means no dirt while the true cereus grows out of the ground. you can use other mediums for this plant. I assure you that this plant will bloom in waves of beauty with as many as fifteen flowers and thrill you and your invited guests. After all this is time for sipping wine and enjoying your dinner size blooms. This is the other dinner.
Evening primrose is another favorite of mine. The plants themselves often grow to be four or five feet tall. The flower spikes are approximately two-two one-half inches in diameter and are bright yellow with four petals. The flowers open in the evening and are closed during the day. This flower is very strongly scented with a perfume like aroma. This attracts pollinating moths to the plants. The evening primrose has a long history of medicinal uses and is edible. It comes with a lot of claims too lengthy to go into here. Research and find out what it maybe able to do for you.
Moonflower or moonvine is another good opportunity for both you and your neighbors to enjoy. It is a relative of the morning glory and can grow to be ten feet tall wrapping around a trellis.
The flowers are purist of white and opening at twilight giving off a clover like perfume. The seed has a very hard coat and slow to germinate. I would advise soaking it in warm water overnight and nicking it with a knife before planting. It should be planted in well drained soil and a sunny location.
This is just a few of those flowers by moonlight and many others can be found to suit indiviual tastes as always in the world of gardening, I need to spend more time looking into all the night blooming flowers that could be grown. Who knows we could be on the verge of a moonlight garden tour.
